The End of the Silence
Mobile phone users will soon be able to make and receive calls on Emirates flights, according to a senior official at the airline. Emirates will become the first carrier in the world to allow passengers to talk on their own phones in the air, Patrick Brannelly, vice-president of Passenger, Communications and Visual Services told.
“We are extremely close to getting all the required approvals from various regulatory bodies. All the telephone regulatory authorities in the Middle East and Europe have already given the green signal for the project,” he said.
Does the Pope solve our traffic problems?
Thou shall not drive under the influence of alcohol. Thou shall respect speed limits. Thou shall not consider a car an object of personal glorification or use it as a place of sin.
The Vatican took a break from strictly theological matters on Tuesday to issue its own rules of the road, a compendium of do’s and don’ts on the moral aspects of driving and motoring. A 36-page document called "Guidelines for the Pastoral Care of the Road" contains 10 Commandments covering everything from road rage, respecting pedestrians, keeping a car in good shape and avoiding rude gestures while behind the wheel.
Hot Europe
Today the peak temperature in Germany reached 37 Celsius, which was the hottest so far this year.
At the same time the peak in Dubai reached 35 Celsius only. The clouds which cooled down the city are left overs of cyclone Gonu which hit the region the last two days.
Green light for luxury and beauty
All stops were pulled out at the inaugural Arab Run in Dubai as cars worth Dh200 million were given the green light to cruise the city’s streets yesterday.
More than 50 top-of-the-range sports cars – some costing up to Dh20million – were driven in convoy from the Endurance City to the Jumeirah Beach Road before spinning around the Dubai Autodrome. And, as the glistening Mercedes SLRs, Porsche Carreras and Lamborghini Murcielagos cruised through Jumeirah and Satwa, police turned all traffic signals to green to ensure drivers enjoyed a smooth ride.
C-Class convoy record
The world’s longest convoy of Mercedes-Benz cars glided into the record books when 153 C-Class luxury saloons hit the roads of Dubai.
“If there was any place in the world this could happen, it is here,” said Julian Redman, Marketing Manager of Mercedes-Benz. The UAE’s C-Class drivers have taken their place in history as part of the biggest convoy of cars of that make. Mercedes joins the likes of Fiat, Ferrari, BMW, and Mazda, which have all set records for the biggest convoys of their cars.
No jam on the Palm
The Palm Jumeirah will have an advanced integrated road and transport network that will keep it free of traffic jams and vehicular congestion, developer Nakheel has promised.
“Three in-depth traffic surveys were carried out for The Palm Jumeirah by MVA, one of the world’s leading traffic consultants. The surveys identified possible “pinch points” on the island and surrounding road systems,” a spokesperson for Nakheel said. “Measures to avoid such problems were recommended and have been implemented to ensure the smooth flow of traffic on the island.”
