Horse of the Year Invasor owned by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance and Industry, won the $6m Dubai World Cup on Saturday at Nad Al Sheba race course.
Seven super horses vied for the world’s richest prize. The American Premium Tap led the race but Invasor ridden by F. Jara came on strongly and in the end beat the field by two lenghts for a definitive and memorable victory.
A touch of home
Labour accommodations in Sonapur and Jebel Ali come alive during weekends with vegetable vendors, barbers, pirated DVD sellers, and illegal taxis, all calling out loud to customers.
The traders come as early as 8am and display their goods at the various nooks and corners of accommodation. The labourers fill their Fridays with as many activities as possible - from getting the laundry done, getting a haircut, to cleaning their beds and preparing a special lunch.
Drug fight united
The United Nations will support Dubai Police’s role in organising training in combating drugs in the country and the region.
Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Chief of Dubai Police yesterday signed a cooperation agreement in this regard with Antonio Maria Costa, the Under-Secretary of the United Nations and the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Nature approved
His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has approved Dubai’s environmental plan, including initiatives and projects to be implemented.
Shaikh Mohammad ordered Dubai Government to place the environmental issue as a top priority. In response, Dubai Government has announced plan to implement several important projects and initiatives, concerning sanctuaries and natural resources, green building and solid waste management.
Put the fence down
Construction work on a stretch of Jumeirah beach near Burj Al Arab was stopped yesterday upon the orders of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The good news came last night when Shaikh Mohammad instructed Dubai Municipality to stop the construction work immediately and remove the boundary wall erected to cordon off the beach for a construction project.
Human traffic jam
Some 180 workers will be deported without receiving their salaries for the past four months.
The 180 workers, who worked illegally for a local government department in Ajman, are now in police custody, a police official said. He said they are all Afghans who infiltrated into the country and were later hired by a local government department to work at construction sites.
The official said they worked for the department for a long time till they were detained two days ago. The workers, now detained at Ajman Central Jail waiting to be deported, lived in poor conditions.
According to an official from the Ajman Naturalisation and Residency Department, they are waiting to receive air tickets for the workers and outpasses for them to be deported.
